There is a captivating background to the Cambodia gambling halls that lie just over the border from next door Thailand, in which gambling den gambling is illegal. Eight gambling halls are situated in a generally tiny area in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect spot, a 3 to 4 hour trip from Bangkok and Macao, the two biggest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai workers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The amazing income gained from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to more than 12.5 million, and there are a couple of controls requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mainly Thai; however, financing sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are apparently required to pass, there are means around this, as is real of most borders.
The initial Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored boat gambling den, features one hundred and fifty slot machine games and 60 table games. The Naga river boat never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat banque, four tables of blackjack, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in the late nineties and the Golden Crown before long opened. There are one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 5 tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and 68 gaming tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 slots and seventy tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six slot machines and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat chemin de fer (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and sixty six of the normal tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. Another one of the eight casinos in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six slots and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an international resort and hotel compound that contains numerous conveniences on top of the gambling hall, which houses ten thousand square feet of 130 slot machine games and eighty eight table games.
